An Eye (and Wallet) Opening New Hobby

I have purchased my first graphic novel, and it won’t be my last.

When I went to the Pop Candy party last month at Isotope in San Francisco, it was the first time I’d ever set foot in a comic book store. Pop Candy columnist Whitney Matheson is always recommending graphic novels and comic books, and I can certainly understand the allure now. Meeting Heroes artist Tim Sale was also an influential factor on my new hobby.

Here are some very helpful lists, courtesy of Whitney’s Comics Crash Course:

I am attending Comic-Con in San Diego this summer, primarily for the Lost panel and pop culture experience, but most of the booths and other panels will be foreign to me. I wanted to at least get a feel for the style of graphic novels out there before I go, so I chose one literally based on name recognition alone.  Pride of Baghdad is written by Brian K. Vaughan, who is a writer and producer on Lost. It is a compelling tale about a family of lions who experience freedom and danger after the zoo in Baghdad is bombed during the war.

Because Superman is my favorite superhero of all time, I borrowed Superman: Red Son from a friend with a sizable graphic novel collection (that I will be pilfering now and then). I have not read it yet, but it re-imagines Superman as a Soviet hero, which is a fascinating concept.

So do you have any comic or graphic novel suggestions for a beginner like me?

Save the Cheerleader: Tim Sale, HEROES Artist

I am still blown away by this custom print, which Heroes artist Tim Sale sketched for me on Saturday night.

UPDATE: Whitney posted new photos and details about the event in today’s Pop Candy, including a link here! I heart her.

Watching him at work certainly gave me a renewed appreciation for all of the graphic art on Heroes. Hopefully I will see Tim at ComicCon in July as well.

I am getting this framed as we speak, my new pop culture treasure.

Teaser: Pop Candy, Pop Culture & Heroes

It is 2am and I am exhausted, but I had to take note of the evening I just experienced while it’s still fresh.

Tonight we went to SF and met up with Whitney Matheson, who writes USA Today’s Pop Candy blog. She was there to chat with her readers and share her enthusiasm for comics and graphic novels. The event took place at Isotope, which is a very cool comic book store/lounge hybrid.

Whitney was so sweet and very accessible, and it was so great to talk with her about Lost!

On top of that, artist Tim Sale was there (he is the very talented man behind all of the art featured on Heroes). Long story short…I watched as Tim sketched and then painted an original portrait of Claire Bennett from Heroes, just for me. It was an incredible pop culture experience, watching him create that piece in only ten minutes. Tim was very nice and patient with all of the fans lined up for autographs and custom sketches (only 10 were allotted; I was first in line).

We even received custom pint glasses designed by Tim Sale himself, each with a portrait of Whitney! They also created a Pop Candy cocktail just for the occasion (see photo above).

I will post a photo of Tim’s sketch on Monday before taking it to get matted and framed.

Unbelievable.

Happy Easter!

I Heart Pop Candy

I am very excited to have the opportunity to meet one of my favorite pop culture columnists this weekend! Whitney Matheson from USA Today’s Pop Candy blog is having a meet & greet with her fans in San Francisco, along with Heroes artist Tim Sale.

I am a relative unknown in the blogosphere, and very appreciative to have dedicated readers and 250-300 page views per day. Whitney linked to my site last year when actor Jim Beaver responded to one of my posts (a letter to John From Cincinnati creator David Milch that I never thought anyone would read), which has resulted in over 11,000 hits for that entry alone! To give you an idea of the magnitude, the second most popular post in this blog’s 2.5 year history is 1,500.  So in addition to being a huge fan of hers, I am forever grateful for that mention.

I will try my best not to geek out or be a wallflower, and will report back here after the event.

Grey’s Anatomy/Private Practice Benefit: The Recap

I flew, I watched, I laughed, I’m back.

Last night my friend and I attended “Good Medicine,” the Grey’s Anatomy/Private Practice benefit show in LA. It was her idea to go, and we speak the same rapid pop culture language, so she was the perfect partner in crime for the evening.

I am having trouble staying awake but I promised a recap, so here goes.

PHOTO UPDATE: TVGuide.com has just posted great photos here from the actual event!

VIDEO UPDATE: Although it may not be there for long, someone has posted a few minutes of footage from Good Medicine here on YouTube.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The pipes. Sara Ramirez (Dr. Callie Torres) and Audra McDonald (Dr. Naomi Bennett)…beautiful, amazing singing voices. Sara received two standing ovations alone. And Gina Taylor-Pickens, real life wife of the chief from Grey’s Anatomy, is an absolutely stunning blues singer as well.
  • The sheer talent of both casts. When they weren’t singing or performing dramatic, hysterical interpretations of fan fiction and mail, they were playing the piano, guitars and harmonica.
  • Surprise musical guest Patty Griffin, who performed “Up To The Mountain” solo acoustic!
  • My hair. Seriously. See above. It behaved. By the way, I do not have a black eye. I was wearing mascara, which I usually only don once a year for our office holiday party. I appear vampiric, but it was just the lighting or lack thereof.

FILE UNDER: OH WELL

The show itself was great, but the evening was substantially more mellow than I’d anticipated. The audience seemed to consist of crew, producers, writers and their families, along with a smattering of fans (but of course all enjoyed it and were very receptive to the entertainment presented). There was one lowly paparazzo stationed outside, but he got bored and left [clarification: he was front of house, but there were plenty of autograph hounds and rude photographers near the back entrance where the actors had parked and tried to leave after the show].

Even though everyone else was getting away with it, I was asked to stop taking photos. My flash was not on, but I was reprimanded nonetheless. From our vantage point of the stage, the photos weren’t turning out clearly anyway (like this  photo of Eric Dane and Brooke Smith below).

STAR SIGHTINGS: VERY RANDOM

Look, even if I know someone’s entire IMDB history, I tend to avoid bothering celebrities of any level. I am not interested in getting their autograph in person, and unless I have something meaningful to say, I prefer to observe from a distance. So I noticed but didn’t actually chat with any of the following people last night…

  • Marc Cherry: Creator & Executive Producer of Desperate Housewives
  • Paul Dooley: Very recognizable character actor, played Dad in Breaking Away and 16 Candles
  • Winnie Holzman: Dooley’s wife, and Creator of My-So Called Life and The Wonder Years
  • Steven Bailey: Joe from Joe’s Bar on Grey’s Anatomy
  • Sarah Utterback: Nurse Olivia from Grey’s Anatomy
  • Greg Pitts & Tim Griffin: George’s brothers on Grey’s Anatomy

I know that I’m forgetting important details, but we stayed up far past the witching hour and I need to nap it out.  Then I plan to revisit this week’s episode of Lost again and post more theories. And then watch Short Bus and The Nines.

UPDATE: Several people have asked what the actors were wearing. I am not a celebrity gossip hound and do not tend to cover the glamorous/fabulous aspects of the industry, but here is my attempt at a summary….

I did not witness a single fashion faux paus. Sandra Oh looked very pretty in a short black and white dress. Katherine Heigl looked every bit the Old Hollywood Movie Star that she is in a beautiful red dress with her hair swept up. Chandra Wilson had a sassy long and fitted black gown on; very non-Bailey. Amy Brenneman was adorable in her strapless cream and black dress. Audra McDonald wins for best arms; she must be a pilates or yoga girl. McDonald, Sara Ramirez, Ellen Pompeo and Brooke Smith all opted for variations on the little black dress, all with great success.  And the gentlemen were as handsome and charming as expected in their suits and tuxes: Eric Dane, James Pickens, TR Knight, Tim Daly, Taye Diggs, Paul Adelstein and Chris Lowell.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Affleck Outdoes Damon: Kimmel’s Response to Silverman’s Video

Comedienne Sarah Silverman recently made a fantastic music parody video about her relationship with Matt Damon, and her boyfriend Jimmy Kimmel responded with one of his own, starring Ben Affleck. Oh, and a few familiar faces…

  • Christina Applegate, Lance Bass, Don Cheadle, Cameron Diaz, Perry Farrell, Harrison Ford, Macy Gray, Josh Groban, Joan Jett, Huey Lewis, the Madden brothers from Good Charlotte, Meatloaf, Rebecca Romjin, and Robin Williams

It is not a secret that I am not a big Affleck fan. However, he has earned huge points for this.

Enjoy, but perhaps with headphones if at work.
