WARMER BUT FAR FROM INSPIRED: GOLDEN GLOBE REACTIONS

I totally support the writers on strike, but the Access Hollywood Golden Globes announcement show and Dateline special preceding it were PAINFUL. I know, I should have just logged on earlier in the evening to see the names of the winners. But I am a pop culture sponge, and apparently a glutton for punishment. I can’t stand Billy Bush (and not just because he’s related to our president; he cut in front of me in the security line at the Vegas airport two years ago – for the record, he’s smallish and nobody else recognized him), and in my opinion NBC mishandled the entire evening. I’m sure they had to rush to piece it all together when it was announced that the official awards show was canceled, but they would have been better off just having the list of names scroll on screen with no human involvement.

Here are the winners, followed by my response to each. I tried to limit myself to one-word reactions, but I am not accustomed to being succinct. Categories noted with an * represent the sad few which I predicted to win.

BEST PICTURE, DRAMA: Atonement (woah, WTF?!)
BEST ACTRESS, DRAMA: Julie Christie – Away From Her (need to Netflix)
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Cate Blanchett – I’m Not There (does she ever suck? no.)
BEST ACTOR, DRAMA: Daniel Day-Lewis – There Will Be Blood * (does he ever suck? no.)
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: Javier Bardem – No Country For Old Men (must be that hair)
BEST PICTURE, COMEDY OR MUSICAL: Sweeney Todd (fine, but it should have been Juno)
BEST ACTRESS, COMEDY OR MUSICAL: Marion Cotillard – La Vie en Rose (shoe-in for Oscar nod)
BEST ACTOR, COMEDY OR MUSICAL: Johnny Depp – Sweeney Todd * (duh)
BEST ANIMATED FILM: Ratatouille (Pixar is golden)
BEST DIRECTOR: Julian Schnabel – The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (no surprise from foreign press)
BEST SCREENPLAY: Ethan and Joel Coen – No Country For Old Men (love them)

BEST TV DRAMA: Mad Men (no. way.)
BEST ACTRESS, TV DRAMA: Glenn Close – Damages * (YES!)
BEST ACTOR, TV DRAMA: Jon Hamm – Mad Men (now that’s a surprise)
BEST TV COMEDY: Extras (smart, but not 30 Rock funny)
BEST ACTRESS, TV COMEDY: Tina Fey – 30 Rock (sweet!)
BEST ACTOR, TV COMEDY: David Duchovny – Californication (shut up. this isn’t even a comedy!)
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS, TV SERIES: Samantha Morton – Longford (miniseries should be different category; not fair)
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR, TV SERIES: Jeremy Piven – Entourage (again? Danson owned this, should have won)

I will be VERY bummed if the Oscars are also canceled, but as a huge film & TV fan, I stand strong in my unwaivering support for the scribes who are responsible for what I watch on the big and small screens.

In totally unrelated matters, my ears have been congested and clogged for days, and my hearing has reached senior citizen lows. Do any of you have suggestions for remedies besides decongestants? The usually reliable Sudafed has been absolutely useless.

Have a nice week!

COLD & UNINSPIRED: GOLDEN GLOBE PREDICTIONS

I was attempting to write a profound essay about the pregnancy film trilogy (Juno, Knocked Up, Waitress), but I have a horrible cold in my sinuses and am not capable of doing much more than this.

Below is a very brief summary of who I would LIKE to win at the non-existent Golden Globes on Sunday. Rather than waste my time predicting who will win, I chose favorites. I haven’t even seen some of these films yet, to be honest.

BEST PICTURE, DRAMA: No Country for Old Men
BEST ACTRESS, DRAMA: Angelina Jolie – A Mighty Heart
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Tilda Swinton – Michael Clayton
BEST ACTOR, DRAMA: Daniel Day-Lewis – There Will Be Blood
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: Phillip Seymour Hoffman – Charlie Wilson’s War
BEST PICTURE, COMEDY OR MUSICAL: Juno
BEST ACTRESS, COMEDY OR MUSICAL: Ellen Page – Juno
BEST ACTOR, COMEDY OR MUSICAL: Johnny Depp – Sweeney Todd
BEST ANIMATED FILM: The Simpsons Movie
BEST DIRECTOR: Ethan & Joel Coen – No Country for Old Men
BEST SCREENPLAY: Diablo Cody – Juno

BEST TV DRAMA: Damages
BEST ACTRESS, TV DRAMA: Glenn Close – Damages
BEST ACTOR, TV DRAMA: Michael C. Hall – Dexter
BEST TV COMEDY: 30 Rock
BEST ACTRESS, TV COMEDY: Mary Louise Parker – Weeds
BEST ACTOR, TV COMEDY: Alec Baldwin – 30 Rock
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS, TV SERIES: Rachel Griffiths – Brothers and Sisters
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR, TV SERIES: Ted Danson – Damages

Next
week I will probably look back at these choices and laugh, but for the
time being and with a cloudy head, they make perfect sense to me. Care to disagree with any of my choices or post your own?

Have a great weekend. If you need me, I’ll be swathed in blankets with a cup of English Breakfast tea and a Breathe-Right across my nose. Hot!

WRITER’S STRIKE UPDATES, TV NEWS

It has been far too long since I’ve written about Writer’s Strike. Obviously there are more informative places for you to receive such news, but I like keeping my readers posted and I am asked about the status of the strike every day.

Did that sound defensive? I am fighting off a cold with every ounce of energy I have, so please excuse the snarky and/or boring nature of this entry. If there is a God, she’d know that I am already in the negative column for vacation days at work, so I would appreciate it is she could just postpone this little cold until the spring. Yes, I accrue a new set of sick days at the beginning of each year, but we those are precious commodities to a high maintenance girl like me. Anyway…

Most of you have probably heard by now that the Golden Globes have been canceled. They were to air on Sunday, but now the winners will be announced via press conference instead. Even though I’ve always enjoyed watching our favorite television and movie stars get sloshed on national television while pretending to be happy for their fellow nominees when they lose, I totally support the writers and respect the actors who refuse to cross picket lines.

Both David Letterman’s Worldwide Pants production company and Tom Cruise’s United Artists movie studio have made independent deals with the Writer’s Guild of America, allowing them to employ writers during the strike. Jay Leno, on the other hand, is receiving serious flack for writing monologues and airing new shows without the permission of the Guild, of which he is a member.

As always, the best sites for up-to-the-minute coverage of the strike are Deadline Hollywood Daily and United Hollywood.

As for the television world, we have to wait until May to see the last few episodes of Bones, and apparently it will move to Monday nights. Why (…I inquire to no one in particular)? And Jon Robin Baitz, the creator of Brothers & Sisters, has left the show due to creative differences with the network. That might prove to be very interesting once production on that series resumes.

Would you like to know how many new episodes of your shows have yet to air? Check out TVGuide.com’s Strike Chart.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off in search of some preventative cold meds. Good evening.

NERD ALERT! GET YOUR ‘LOST’ FIX HERE

I know I’m not the only one who geeks out whenever the new LOST promos air on TV. And I also know that there are thousands out there who are also counting down the days until Season 4 premieres on January 31.

So here are a few ways to entertain yourselves in the meantime…

Start by watching the video on Fly Oceanic Air. Then go to the interactive Find 815 site, where you watch another video and then follow the clues and story.

Apparently, there are actual Oceanic Air billboards up in Portland right now. That is an expensive marketing campaign, my friends. I am impressed.

Oh, and Oceanic Airlines put out a fake press release last week, announcing their return to service. The most interesting part of it is the list of new destinations (many of which are related to LOST survivors and flashbacks, and some of which probably tie into the new season):

Los Angeles, CA
Tustin, CA
Ames, IA
Miami, FL
New York, NY
Portland, OR
Knoxville, TN
Seoul, South Korea
Sydney, Australia

In other LOST news, you can watch an 8 minute, 15 second review of the entire series so far on ABC.com, as well as every single episode of the first 3 seasons, now streaming in HD for free. But remember – the writers of those episodes do not receive ANY compensation for their work when it airs online (support the writer’s strike; boycott online viewing until it settles!).

Ok then, what are you waiting for?

THE SURGERY CHRONICLES, PT 12: THE FINAL CHAPTER; A SUMMARY

Three weeks ago today, I had back surgery. Today, I can walk and drive without pain, and I returned to work (all without the assistance of medication)!

I have been writing about the process and sharing my experiences, but it’s time to move on and return to a topic I love far more than my little old lady ailments – pop culture.

To sum up, here is how I spent the last 21 days of my life:

  • Books: 2
  • Episodes of 30 Rock (Season 1) on DVD: 2
  • Episodes of Nip/Tuck (Season 4) on DVD: 3
  • Episodes of Lost (Season 3) on DVD: 8
  • Naps: 13
  • Blog entries posted: 15
  • Movies (cable/TiVO/theater): 15
  • Movie-doku puzzles: 21 (13 successes, 8 failures)

In retrospect, I was quite productive for someone recovering from major surgery and under the (prescribed) influence!

I totally appreciated your supportive emails and comments, and I hope you stick around for more entertaining posts. Stay tuned for reviews of Juno (absolutely LOVED it) and Charlie Wilson’s War (disappointing), as well as the Season 5 premiere of The L Word (I watch it because I HAVE to, but yikes).

THE SURGERY CHRONICLES, PT 10: THE SPIRITUAL & THE STRIPPER (MY HOLIDAY READING)

Happy Christmas Eve and Merry Christmas. I hope your holiday has been lovely so far. I am quite a happy camper myself, having received the following:

  • Season 3 of Lost
  • Season 3 of The Office
  • Knocked Up
  • Waitress

Combined with two seasons of The Sopranos and Season 2 of Extras, which I gave to my better half, our DVD collection has taken a major leap in the right direction.

So the strangest thing has happened; I have returned to an old but familiar hobby…reading. Actual books. For the first time in years, I am buried in books rather than glued to my laptop. Don’t get me wrong; I love reading and majored in World Literature, so perhaps I have been subconsciously rebelling against the ridiculous number of tomes that I ingested during those four years of college. And I’m sure that this renewed interest is a result of having more time on my hands than usual, and slowing down in general. But I am absolutely loving it.

I recently picked up and am in the middle of reading Eat Pray Love, which is easily one of my favorite books in recent memory. But I’ve reached the spiritual India section, and wanted something on the lighter side for the holiday.

This afternoon I took my first long walk since having surgery. I went to the bookstore and bought Candy Girl, an autobiographical and very entertaining look at a year in the life of Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody…back when she was a stripper in the Midwest. I’ve been obsessed with seeing Juno and haven’t been able to go due to physical limitations, so this was the next best thing. And let me tell you, I can’t put this one down. It is postpone-my-pain-meds-so-I-can-stay-focused good. Her writing and her story are very forthright and refreshing, and I am now certain that Cody deserves every bit of the hype being hurled in her direction. I also recommend her blog, which is just as deliciously frank.

After re-reading that I now have Knocked Up and Waitress on DVD and that I can’t wait to see Juno, it might appear that I am fascinated by pregnancy. Mere coincidence, I assure you.

Happy holidays! Let me know what your favorite gift was, and if you have any book recommendations as well.

- Jo
