LBs. IN THE MLB: WHEN FAMOUS MEN GAIN WEIGHT

There is a story in the upcoming issue of ESPN The Magazine called “ Is Cabrera Living Too Large?” It is about the weight that Florida Marlins star Miguel Cabrera has gained over the last four years. That’s right, an entire article about a man who has packed on a few extra lbs. and how his financial future might be impacted by it.

We don’t see that very often.

Is it wrong that this article made me happy?

In the interest of research and comparison, I’ve put together the photos above of Cabrera a few years ago vs. Cabrera this season. It’s just like US Weekly might do for their Tarts of the Week..on the rare occasion that the skinny minnies eat sandwiches.

CATCHING A BREAK? THE A’S MAKE A TRADE

(This is the part where you non-baseball fans scroll down to the trivial stuff…)

Wow, the A’s made a huge trade today. Jason Kendall is now a Chicago Cub. Perhaps this is the kind of move that will light a fire under the team’s lackluster offense.

I am surprised that he was traded because a) Mike Piazza has not recovered enough from his shoulder injury to return as anything other than a DH, and b) Kendall has played a huge role in the success of Oakland’s starting rotation this year (the best ERA in the American League, no less). Breaking up that kind of chemistry is a risk, but given GM Billy Beane’s track record, I have faith.

BLEACHER BLISS: MY VIEW OF THE HOME RUN DERBY

I am far too tired to accurately describe my Home Run Derby experience, so I will let the photos tell the story. My seat was unbelievable, and so was the entire day.

This is an aerial view of McCovey Cove.

I was standing right there between those two gentlemen during NL and AL batting practice. And no, I did not catch a single ball. The kids who were shagging the balls on the field ignored my glove as well. But the guy in the red shirt above caught several home runs during the Derby, including a coveted Gold Ball (which means that $17,000 was donated to charity because a player hit a home run with it).

My view of the field. Perfect.

Bonds. Young enough to take batting practice, but too old to do what he does best. In his own backyard. For the fans. For a team that probably signed him for this very reason.

Aaron Rowand (Phillies), Russell Martin (Dodgers), Ryan Howard (Phillies), Carlos Lee (Astros), Miguel Cabrera (Marlins), and Derrek Lee (Cubs).

Carlos Beltran and Jose Reyes of the NY Mets.

Kenny Mayne was getting ready to report from the bleachers for ESPN.

Creepy mascots on parade.

I don’t have any actual photos from the Home Run Derby, but the balls were flying fast and furiously toward my section most of the afternoon. It was amazing and I am exhausted.

Good night for now.

ALL STAR EXPERIENCE, DAY 1: SUNDAY SOFTBALL & CELEBS

I spent the day in the sun at AT&T Park in San Francisco, watching the Futures Game and Celebrity Softball Game. The weather was perfect and I ate too much. It was a good day.

And now, for the name-dropping/C-level star sightings of the day…outside of the ballpark I ran into Dodgers GM Ned Colletti (true Giants fans would insert a hiss and boo here) and ex-player/ex-ESPN Baseball Tonight host Harold Reynolds. The B-level folks were on the field (Alyssa Milano, Rob Schneider, Jeff Garlin, etc.).  Drama (Kevin Dillon) was a no-show.

The first game was a tad dull, as the World Team defeated the US Team in a landslide and Future A’s star Michael Madsen didn’t even get to pitch. Then they made the field smaller  for softball, which resulted in many home runs from celebrities like Desperate Housewives‘ James Denton.

I’m not a huge fan of the show, but Denton was one of the only celebs to sign autographs for the fans before the game. He is actually part owner of the Orange County Flyers Professional Baseball Team in Fullerton. And he plays guitar in Band From TV with Hugh Laurie (House!), where all proceeds go to charity. So now I’m on Team Denton.

Tomorrow night I will return, to attend the Home Run Derby. I imagine that McCovey Cove will be a zoo of kayaks and rafts, much more chaotic than today (see photo above). I have a great front seat in the left field bleachers, and am very excited about the possibility of catching a home run ball. Should one fall into my glove, fantastic. I’m not sure that I’m capable of actually securing a screaming fastball on a projectile directly at my head. I set the TiVO to ESPN just in case I do catch one. Or one knocks me silly.

Even though there are no A’s participating in the Home Run Derby, I will be sporting my new Dan Haren All Star shirt. Because I can.

Stay tuned for a post-Home Run Derby blog late tomorrow night or Tuesday!

ALL STAR SUNDAY: BASEBALL IN MY BACKYARD (UPDATED)

UPDATE: I now have a ticket to Monday’s Homerun Derby at AT&T Park in SF!! The best part? Left field bleachers, 2nd row. PRIME location to catch a ball or two. Or duck and cover while throngs of men throw themselves into a frenzy attempting to do the same. Tune in to ESPN on Monday…I’ll be the five foot tall woman by herself in the white A’s jersey, surrounded by overeager gloves on large men and gangly teenagers. Woo hoo!

Ok, so AT&T Park is not exactly in my backyard. But it’s in the proximity, and I LOVE baseball, so I’m doing everything I can to attend the Homerun Derby on Monday.

I will be going to the Futures Game and All-Star Legends/Celebrity Softball Game on Sunday, which should be quite entertaining. Alyssa Milano, Dane Cook, Rob Schneider, Jerry Rice, and even Kevin Dillon (Drama!) will be playing.

Now I have to decide if I am geeky enough to go to the FanFest beforehand.

Dan Haren will be the sole A’s representative in Tuesday night’s All-Star Game, and he has more than earned a starting spot among the best pitchers in both leagues. I’m rooting for the American League all the way.

If you know anyone with a single ticket to the Homerun Derby, let me know!

(WALK)OFF THE CUST; HOMERUN HERO IN OAKLAND

There’s nothing more beautiful than a walk-off homerun on a Sunday afternoon.

The A’s have a new man in town, Jack Cust. He’s so new to the team that there isn’t even an official team photo of him in an A’s uniform online yet.

Cust won the game today by hitting a homerun in the 9th inning with two out and two on. Not only was it his first walk-off homerun, it was his 6th homerun in only 26 at-bats as a member of the Oakland A’s; almost one for every game he’s played on this team. Who does that?? The most infuriating part is that no one is talking about it outside of Oakland. Not ESPN, not MLB. Unbelievable.

The guy was just acquired to replace Mike Piazza at DH while he’s on the DL. Even if just for the week, it’s nice to have a new hero in the green & gold.

Now hopefully that mojo will transfer across the parking lot into Oracle Arena as the Warriors begin Game 4 in a few minutes…
