‘Paper Heart’ Full of Soul: A Review

Honestly, I can’t remember the last time I watched a movie with a smile on my face from start to finish.  Paper Heart is a unique little film with tremendous soul and spirit.

Shot in pseudo documentary style, Paper Heart is a genuine exploration of what love means to  average Americans and a handful of actors/comedians. Co-writer and star Charlyne Yi, whom many are familiar with from her role as the stoner girl in Knocked Up, has a very refreshing perspective and onscreen presence. The film effortlessly captures and exposes Yi’s quirky personality, but it is endearing rather than cloying.

I appreciated that Yi’s interviews with her famous friends were brief and not the focus of the movie; they did not distract from the story or pace. In fact, none of Yi’s interviews came across as fake, forced or scripted. They shot so much footage for the film that many of her interviews did not make the final cut; visit the
official website to watch Yi chat with Jack Black, Bobcat Goldthwait, Bill Hader, Jason Ritter, Paul Scheer and more!

For the record, she and Michael Cera are not and have never been a couple in real life. Recent tabloid fodder has suggested otherwise, but their relationship was strictly for and in the film. Frankly, I loved watching their sweet connection unfold before our eyes because they are the king and queen of awkward.

The vignettes in Paper Heart reminded me of the real couples in When Harry Met Sally; Yi presents a more charming, heartwarming, modern update of those interview interludes. Regardless of whether or not you share Yi’s hesitant attitude toward matters of the heart, I guarantee that you will be both nodding your head in agreement with and laughing at some of the words of wisdom gleaned from the individuals and couples she spoke with.

Paper Heart opens in limited release today, and expands to a wider audience next weekend. I truly recommend that you experience this film for yourselves. It is not a chick flick or typical independent film; the actors, humor and story will appeal to both men and women, without question.

Follow Your ‘Paper Heart’: A Must-See Movie

Be still my Paper Heart. I have been looking forward to this film for months, and am very excited to attend a screening of it tomorrow night.

There is a captivating and refreshing spirit about this movie that simply jumps out and off of the screen. Trust me…just watch the trailer.

Charlyne Yi is a love skeptic. She travels across the county, interviewing friends and strangers about matters of the heart.  Some of her friends include Michael Cera, Jack Black, Paul Scheer, Bill Hader and her Knocked Up co-stars Seth Rogen and Martin Starr. The film has a pseudo documentary feel and style, and looks to be both highly entertaining and poignant.

Paper Heart opens in theaters this weekend. Stay tuned for my review of the film on Friday!

I’ll Be There For…Some of You: Revisiting a Few “Friends”

I find it hard to believe that Friends debuted 15 years ago. While that makes ME feel old, I am rather impressed with how one half of the cast has fared since the season finale.  That’s right, three of them. The female friends. Because let’s face it…have you seen anything stellar from the likes of David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc or Matthew Perry recently?

The reason I’m revisiting this show and topic is that I recently discovered yet another gem from Lisa Kudrow, the online series Web Therapy. Dry, dark, hysterical. Kudrow is the queen of amusingly awkward and uncomfortable.  I was not at all surprised to learn that she was a 2009 Webby Award winner for Outstanding Comedic Performance for these webisodes. Guest stars have included Courteney Cox, Rashida Jones, Jane Lynch and Steven Weber. Trust me, it is well worth 10-15 minutes of your time each week to watch this series, from Kudrow’s frequent writer/director collaborator Don Roos (The Opposite of Sex, Happy Endings).

After Friends ended, I fell in love with Kudrow’s wildly underrated series The Comeback, which featured up and coming actors like Malin Akerman (Watchmen) and Kellan Lutz (Twilight). It only lasted one season on HBO, but at least she was Emmy nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress.  And then I was very pleasantly surprised by her performance in the dark comedy The Opposite of Sex; to me it was worthy of  a Best Supporting Actress nod.  Currently, Lisa Kudrow has a few films ready for release and in production…I am hoping that her roles lean toward the unexpected in at least some of them.

Jennifer Aniston is obviously the break out star from the six pack of Friends, but I have yet to discover why so many love her on the big screen. I still do not buy her as a MOVIE STAR, despite the obvious indie attempt (The Good Girl), the glamor and the endless adoration from fans and the media. I have enjoyed Aniston in exactly one movie thus far, and ironically it was a voice-only role (The Iron Giant). Until she successfully pulls off a Monster or Boys Don’t Cry level transformation, I will continue to relegate Aniston’s films to rainy afternoon, happen-to-catch-it-on-cable status.

Of the three actresses from Friends, I still find that Courteney Cox has the best comedic timing. Her series Dirt was a true guilty pleasure and I was quite entertained by her stint on Scrubs as well. She is the only reason that I plan to give the new ABC show Cougar Town a chance when it debuts in the fall. Based on that title alone, it may have otherwise been a pass.

By the way, there is something about Jennifer Westfeldt (who will be on 24 next season; she also co-wrote & starred in the fantastic Kissing Jessica Stein) that has always reminded me of Lisa Kudrow. The above is a Gap ad that she appeared in with her boyfriend of over ten years, Jon Hamm (Mad Men).

I digress, as usual.

Kevin Pollak’s Chat Show

Entertaining as hell, smart, good-humored, informative and a bit dirty. What more would you want from an online-only talk show hosted by an actor’s actor? Kevin Pollak (A Few Good Men, The Usual Suspects) has a great Internet show that I highly recommend to fellow pop culture fans of film, music, television and technology.

Recent guests have included Matthew Perry, Curt Smith (Tears for Fears), Jon Hamm (Mad Men) and Felicia Day (Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog).

Click here for more information about Kevin Pollak’s Chat Show and to watch recent episodes, or download all of them for free on iTunes. Just a heads up – you may want to use headphones if you watch at work; Kevin and his guests have free reign with regard to language (which is one of the reasons I love it).  You can also follow Kevin on Twitter. Of course.

New episodes stream live every Sunday at 5pm PDT.

If you tune in, let me know what you think!

Oh, Hello. Let’s Talk TV. Season Finales, Anyone?

Hi, my name is Jo and I suck. Last week when my friend Mel told me that she stopped coming to this site due to lack of updated content, it made me realize that I have been neglecting a huge portion of my pop culture life. And you.

See this phrase and logo above? It is on a Life is Good hat that I own, but I do not take the advice it offers.  As most of you are aware, I have been inside of a Lost box with television tunnel-vision on for several months now. I am currently recovering (albeit with a rather large time-travel and character death hangover), as the fifth season has just ended.

But the good news for those of you who don’t watch that show is that I’m back, I’m ready to talk about shows that YOU love and watch, and I will be doing so much more frequently now. If you’re back, thank you for your patience. If you’re new, welcome to my babbling brook of consciousness!

We have several very emotional/controversial/strange season finales to discuss. The Office (baby!). Grey’s (RIP Gizzie?!). Private Practice (the horror!). Fringe (woah). Bones (wtf?). Heroes (yawn). Brothers & Sisters (let the door hit you on the way out, Tommy). 30 Rock (ten shades of awesome; I Lizzed). I haven’t seen the House finale yet, but Kutner’s death and Amber’s ghost made for a pretty great season.

File under: surprised but excited – Dollhouse has been renewed. I was very skeptical of this new series because of the pace of the first few episodes, but I highly recommend it as a summer series to catch up on because it is quite unique and compelling.

File under: donde esta? Samantha Who was yanked from the schedule without much notice or reason. It hasn’t been canceled so I’m curious to find out when they’ll be bringing it back.

File under: sad but relieved to get closure – ABC will be airing the final three episodes of Pushing Daisies at the end of the month.

Random season/schedule shows I’m currently enjoying: Rescue Me and Southland.

Summer TV: bring on True Blood and Mad Men. And let’s admit our guilty pleasure reality fixes…The Bachelorette starts tomorrow. I will also openly admit my addiction to The Biggest Loser; this was the first season I tuned in and am now hooked.

New shows: so looking forward to Glee (debuting this week on FOX) and Nurse Jackie (debuts on 6/8, Showtime).

And music! Anyone else listening to the new Green Day? I am loving that and the new Phoenix album.

Movies: loved loved loved the new Star Trek. Was disappointed by Wolverine. New films I am really looking forward to include Away We Go (John Krasinski & Maya Rudolph/directed by Sam Mendes), Julie & Julia (Meryl Streep & Amy Adams/directed by Nora Ephron), and Nine (ensemble musical/directed by Rob Marshall).

So, hi. Thanks for stopping by. By all means, please let me know what shows, movies, bands, books, etc. that you’d love for me to discuss here and I will do my best. I owe you. And I’ve missed you.

Star Trek: The Trailer & Anticipation

I love movie trailers, so I arrive far too early to every film. Lately, I am reduced to a teenage fangirl with wide eyes and goosebumps when I see the trailer for the new and revamped Star Trek. Bring on the summer blockbusters; I can’t wait to see this movie.

STAR TREK

The film comes out on May 8. The season finale of Lost is on May 13. Thanks to J.J. Abrams, I will be consumed and overwhelmed for one week in May.
