GREY’S SPINOFF

I, for one, am all for the Grey’s Anatomy spinoff. As a huge Kate Walsh fan, I am thrilled that she is the one being given the opportunity to shine as the lead on another show. They’ve lined up quite a cast: Tim Daly (from ABC’s recently deceased The Nine), Taye Diggs (from ABC’s recently deceased Day Break), Merrin Dungey (from ABC’s previously deceased Alias), and Amy Brenneman (from CBS’ long gone Judging Amy).

I look forward to the 2-hour season finale of Grey’s in May, which will introduce us to the new doctors in Dr. Addison Montgomery’s world.

In light of disappointing recent developments on Grey’s Anatomy (i.e. the non-fatal drowning and the George/Izzie drunken debacle), fresh characters and storylines will be a welcome change.

MEMORABLE CHARACTERS: WHO I LOVE ON TV & WHY

[Last August, I compiled a list of Favorite Television Characters Ever. Since that time I have modified it only slightly, and have decided to elaborate.]

Believe it or not, my world does not revolve entirely around a bunch of strangers with daddy and guilt issues who crashed onto a mysterious island. Lost isn’t even the first show I’ve been obsessed with (for years, I lived and breathed all things X-Files). I have a tendency to dive into a fair number of shows and discuss them with such fervor that friends and family tend to look at me askew and wonder privately if I have a life. Thankfully, I am also surrounded by people who speak the same language; who animatedly overanalyze and speculate about water-cooler shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Lost and The Office with me at length.

That being said, I’m going to break down exactly what I love about my favorite characters and personalities on television. Because although I do have a life, I also maintain a lifelong fascination and virtual relationship with a select group of primarily fictitious characters.

Before any of you fanatics jump all over my back about glaring omissions, keep in mind that I don’t actually have time to watch all popular shows and fan favorites like 24, Battlestar Galactica, CSI or Gilmore Girls.

And yes, I’m aware a large number of my selections are from two camps: JJ Abrams and HBO.

So here is my updated list, with photos. Alphabetically, of course…

DR. MIRANDA BAILEY (CHANDRA WILSON), GREY’S ANATOMY

What’s not to love? She’s the boss but also the soul of the show.

CLAIRE BENNET (HAYDEN PANETTIERE), HEROES

I can’t quite figure out why she’s my favorite Hero, but I look forward to her story each week. Perhaps it’s because we’re watching the demise of her innocence as she is exposed to the darker world of her fellow friends with power.

DR. TEMPERANCE “BONES” BRENNAN (EMILY DESCHANEL), BONES

For me, Bones has been the perfect replacement for my beloved Scully; all business but with serious chemistry simmering just beneath the surface between her and her partner (David Boreanz, who is a sexier version of Mulder).

SHERIFF SETH BULLOCK (TIMOTHY OLYPHANT), DEADWOOD

He is so visibly conflicted and twitchy. That seething mustache snarl alone makes my day.

SYDNEY BRISTOW (JENNIFER GARNER), ALIAS

The ass-kicking + the outfits + the tech talk = Hot.

CAROL BURNETT, THE CAROL BURNETT SHOW

A hero of mine since childhood, I would run to the mirror after each episode to attempt to mimic her facial expressions.

ELAINE BENES (JULIA LOUIS-DREYFUS), SEINFELD

On top of the infamous dancing and that hair, she was the real star of the show.

CALAMITY JANE (ROBIN WEIGERT), DEADWOOD

No one else can slur words with such fortitude. I’m not sure I’ve ever loved a TV drunk so much.

ANGELA CHASE (CLAIRE DANES), MY SO-CALLED LIFE

No other show or actress captured and epitomized the awkward teenage years better.

CLAIRE FISHER (LAUREN AMBROSE), SIX FEET UNDER

Complicated and moody. The perfect undertaker’s daughter.

MARSHALL FLINKMAN (KEVIN WEISMAN), ALIAS

Every show should have a resident geek who comes to the rescue with such heart and loyalty.

TOBIAS FÜNKE (DAVID CROSS), ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT

Two words: never nude.

HENRY GALE/BEN LINUS (MICHAEL EMERSON), LOST

Creepy, surprising, and spectacularly acted.

TOMMY GAVIN (DENIS LEARY), RESCUE ME

What a mess of a man. Leary fits and fills the role like no other.

ARI GOLD (JEREMY PIVEN), ENTOURAGE

Perhaps it is because Piven embodies (to those of us outside of the industry) my perception of a real Hollywood agent. Or perhaps it is because no one chews up and spits out the scenery better or with more energy than Piven.

JIM HALPERT (JOHN KRASINSKI), THE OFFICE

An obvious choice, but I’m on his bandwagon. I only wish I were as capable of clever office pranks and lingering glances that speak volumes.

JOHN LOCKE (TERRY O’QUINN), LOST

An enigma. I love that I have no idea what his real story is, nor the direction he’ll take us next on the show. In my opinion, he is the most important character on the show, and the key to all answers on the island and beyond.

DEXTER MORGAN (MICHAEL C. HALL), DEXTER

There are no characters currently on television quite like Dexter, a blood splatter analyst-by-day/vigilante-murderer-by-night. You will find yourself entirely enthralled and entertained by Hall; he is miles away from David on Six Feet Under, which is an impressive feat.

DETECTIVE FRANK PEMBLETON (ANDRE BRAUGHER), HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREET

Just a great character played by an amazing actor. Powerful and mesmerizing.

ALICE PIESZECKI (LEISHA HAILEY), THE L WORD

She’s a writer, she’s sarcastic, and the only character I have ever liked or related to in any way during all four seasons of this frustrating show.

JO POLNIACZEK (NANCY MCKEON), THE FACTS OF LIFE

Besides the fact that her character shares my first name, she was also a tomboy, which made her the very first person on television that I ever related to on any level.

FELICITY PORTER (KERI RUSSELL), FELICITY

Oh how I long for the days of dormitory misadventures and melodrama with Felicity and her friends. For the record, I was on Team Noel from day one. Oh, and I liked the short hair.

VERN SCHILLINGER (JK SIMMONS), OZ

The most memorably menacing and vile character in recent television history. A complete monster, Simmons just nails it as the walking embodiment of evil.

AGENT DANA SCULLY (GILLIAN ANDERSON), THE X-FILES

Easily my favorite of all time. What can I say; I have a thing for scientists.

DR. JACK SHEPHARD (MATTHEW FOX), LOST

He wasn’t on my list until the beginning of Season 3. His intensity is quite palpable and convincing.

DETECTIVE ANDY SIPOWICZ (DENNIS FRANZ), NYPD BLUE

It’s as if we were watching a vat of water boil over with great fury. Fantastic.

CARMELA SOPRANO (EDIE FALCO), THE SOPRANOS

A long-suffering wife no longer, she owns every scene and is phenomenal.

AL SWEARENGEN (IAN MCSHANE), DEADWOOD

The eyes, the swagger, the language. One of my favorite shows of all time, and we only got three seasons. Very disappointing.

KEVIN WALKER (MATTHEW RHYS), BROTHERS & SISTERS

The industry can pat itself on the back as much as they want for the inclusion of gay and lesbian characters on popular shows, but never before has a show featured such a positive, everyday gay lead character like Kevin Walker. He is not a stereotype in any way, and it is refreshing to see his relationships explored in the same light as his television siblings’.

NORA WALKER (SALLY FIELD), BROTHERS & SISTERS

She is giving an Emmy-worthy performance as the matriarch in this criminally underrated series about family. I love all scenes between her and Calista Flockhart. The most welcome return to television in years.

RAMBLE ON: QUICK THOUGHTS ABOUT DEXTER, GREY’S, LOST, THE OFFICE, RUNWAY, NEW TV & JT!

1. I have been listening to Justin Timberlake’s new CD. Judging from the lyrics, I think I underestimated Cameron Diaz; she must be a fabulous…girlfriend.

2. My two favorite shows of the season so far? Heroes and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.

3. I look forward to 30 Rock, but am a little disconcerted by the fact that the fabulously funny Rachel Dratch has been demoted to part time player; she was a main character, but that role now belongs to Jane Krakowski (Ally McBeal).

4. The Office has returned, better than ever. The premiere episode is destined to become a classic. Does anyone look directly into the eyes of a camera better than Jim? I don’t think so.

5. I can’t wait for Dexter, which begins on Sunday. If you have Showtime, you have to tune in. It’s a genius concept…Michel C. Hall (David from Six Feet Under) stars as a blood splatter expert by day and serial killer by night. Seriously.

6. Grey’s Anatomy: Although many are on Team Meredith (for reasons I cannot fathom), I have always been on Team Addison. I love that she drunk-dialed McSteamy during the inebriated day of mourning her marriage. Doesn’t he still live in NY, where she and Derek relocated from? If so, she must have called him pretty early on…

7. My thoughts about the four Project Runway finalists: I like Uli and I don’t mind the patterns. I like that Laura is consistent and has a very distinct point of view, not to mention the fact that she looks like an uptight career woman but is in fact a mother of 6 with a sailor’s mouth. I don’t like much at all about Jeffrey. I heart Michael Knight. I am on his bandwagon. He seems like a genuinely nice guy and has a diverse portfolio of styles. Regardless of the outcome, he will probably be the most successful after the show.

8. I love that Sally Field and Tom Skerritt are playing a married couple again, this time on Brothers & Sisters. Don’t forget… they were the parents in Steel Magnolias! Although I always think about and am still creeped out by his infamous scene with Drew Barrymore in Poison Ivy. For the four others of you who have seen this 1992 guilty pleasure flick, one word: piano.

9. The third season of Lost begins next Wednesday…Bring. It. On. I will be posting a blog dedicated to predictions and theories next week before it airs. Stay tuned!

GREY’S: ANATOMY OF A FINALE

Why, why, why?! I will never understand why networks move hit shows from their beloved and comfortable time slots. ABC is taking a huge risk by moving Grey’s Anatomy to Thursdays at 9pm next season. Grey’s is an experience; that rare television program that defines Sunday evening, the kind of program that we all need before facing the week ahead. Although I’m happy to see that the new date and time won’t conflict with my Survivor addiction, I doubt that this new timeslot will increase viewership and/or ratings. Frankly, I just can’t imagine rooting for George, hissing at Meredith, loving Cristina and looking forward to a Dr. Bailey diatribe that late in the week.

I was pleasantly surprised by the emotional depth of the Grey’s season finale. All season long, the show has been consistent and the writing fantastic, but last night the producers and writers really stepped up and delivered exactly the right ingredients to keep us obsessing during the long summer hiatus; it was poignant, compelling, revealing and frustrating.

If it were up to me, the show would be called Yang’s Anatomy, as Meredith Grey is my least favorite character. I’ve never been able to shake my initial impression of Ellen Pompeo as a Renée Zellweger doppelganger with an equally irritating voice. But Sandra Oh as Cristina Yang simply steals the show and every scene she’s in. I used to watch a very average HBO show, Arliss, just because of her. On Grey’s, Oh’s Dr. Yang is complicated, infuriating and very human; hers is the only story line that holds my interest without fail, and the only personality I find remotely realistic.

If you need to reach me before fall, I’ll be the one on the couch with the Team Addison t-shirt.

BIG LOVE, ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT & GREY’S

If you have HBO, you must watch Big Love. This new series is very original and thought-provoking, not to mention controversial. On a basic level, the show is about polygamy, but there is much more depth to it than that.  Bill Paxton is a man with several families and a tremendous amount of responsibility; you can literally feel his tension as he goes from house to house, and wife to wife. While some might fantasize about the idea of having three wives, the reality is unglamorous. Paxton is perfectly cast as the sole patriarch, running a successful business while balancing two covert marriages (his first marriage is the only public and legal one), and battling the politics of the polygamy sect he chose to distance himself from. The youngest wife, played by Ginnifer Goodwin, has a blog: http://www.hbo.com/biglove/. I have to say that I will never be able to see actress Daveigh Chase (who plays Rhonda on this show) as anything other than the evil girl in The Ring. And it’s nice to see Tina Majorino on screen again – after many years as a child actor (Waterworld, When a Man Loves a Woman), she only recently reemerged in Napoleon Dynamite and on Veronica Mars.

The third season of Arrested Development is coming out on DVD in June, but I haven’t heard if Showtime or another network has picked up the show. Take a glance at the current primetime sitcoms that rank consistently high in the ratings each week; there is nothing as remotely funny or clever as Arrested Development. Sad.

I heard a rumor that someone is coming out on Grey’s Anatomy. Something tells me it will be a woman, she won’t be a main character, and she’ll be bisexual (especially given that the sexual proclivities of the leads have been on display since day one). I don’t believe there has been a recurring bisexual male character on television since Homicide: Life on the Street boldly and briefly delved into that territory in the 90’s.
